“Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.” (Colossians 3:22)

This is one of those passages that can make a modern reader pause. The instruction, given to enslaved believers in the Roman Empire, is shocking in its context. Paul counsels them to obey their masters in everything. He doesn't command this obedience simply to keep the peace or win favor, but for a much higher purpose: to do it with a sincere heart and a deep reverence for the Lord.

While the Bible never condones the horrific institution of slavery, these instructions must have had a powerful impact. Imagine the witness it provided when a believer, stripped of their freedom, chose to serve with integrity and honor, not for their earthly master, but for their heavenly one. This principle, though born in a difficult past, holds profound relevance for us today. Every one of us serves someone, whether it's a boss, a client, or a customer. The posture of our heart in that service is what truly matters.

The Heart of the Matter

The key to understanding this challenging verse lies in the motive. Paul urges a service that is genuine, coming from a "sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord." This is a call to work just as hard when we are alone as we do when others are watching. Our effort should not be a performance designed to impress or gain favor. Instead, it should flow from a deep, internal dedication to God himself.

The Amplified Bible offers a beautiful expansion of this idea: "Servants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not only when their eyes are on you as pleasers of men, but in simplicity of purpose [with all your heart] because of your reverence for the Lord and as a sincere expression of your devotion to Him” (v. 22 AMP). This "simplicity of purpose" reorients our entire perspective on work. It transforms our daily tasks from a list of duties into an act of devotion.

This principle extends even to difficult situations. You may work for an employer who seems to do nothing to deserve your respect. Yet, Paul’s teaching suggests that respect is due to their position of authority over you. In another letter, he clarifies that this approach has a missional purpose: “All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered” (1 Timothy 6:1). To serve them well is to serve Christ well and to protect the reputation of the gospel.

Working for the Lord

The most encouraging truth in this passage is found in the verses that follow. Paul reveals the true identity of our ultimate boss. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24).

This is a game-changing perspective. When we report for work, we are not just working for a paycheck or for our manager’s approval. We are serving the Lord Christ himself. This infuses every task, no matter how small or mundane, with divine purpose.

• Answering emails becomes an opportunity to serve with integrity.

• Meeting a deadline becomes an act of faithful stewardship.

• Cleaning a workspace becomes an expression of honor for the one who sees all things.

This mindset frees us from the need for human approval. We can find satisfaction in a job well done, knowing that our true reward is not a bonus or a promotion, but an eternal inheritance from the Lord. Our work becomes a primary arena for our worship.

What does it look like to apply this in your life today? It begins with a shift in your heart. Before you start your work, take a moment to dedicate your efforts to the Lord. Ask Him to help you serve with sincerity, integrity, and a focus on honoring Him above all else.

Consider the people you answer to in your life. How can you serve them in a way that reflects your reverence for God? It might mean going the extra mile on a project, showing respect even when it’s difficult, or choosing honesty when it would be easier to cut corners.

Your work is not separate from your spiritual life; it is a central part of it. Embrace the truth that you are serving the Lord Christ in all you do. Allow this perspective to bring purpose to your labor and joy to your heart, knowing that your sincere service is an act of worship that carries the promise of a great reward.
