Let the Word of Christ Dwell Richly in You—Colossians 3:16

One of my best memories comes from a season where a few friends and I gathered at Starbucks on Saturday mornings. We would spend hours studying the Word and encouraging one another. It was a simple practice, but we had so much fun that it wasn’t unusual for others to stop by our table, drawn in by curiosity, sometimes joining our group or asking for prayer.
Those Saturday mornings transformed me. I learned so much, but more than that, I found incredible joy in the Word of God, and the friendships forged in that coffee shop remain some of the dearest I have. There is something truly spectacular that happens when believers gather to encourage, sing, and strengthen one another in the Word. This is how we are equipped to live in the world—shining God’s love to all we encounter, refreshed by the Holy Spirit in community.
This experience brings to life the instruction Paul gives in Colossians 3:16: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”
Immerse Yourself in the Word
Paul’s instruction begins with a profound invitation: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” This isn’t about casually reading a verse here and there. The word “dwell” suggests making a home, settling in, and becoming intimately familiar. It’s an encouragement to let the Word of Christ saturate our lives until it overflows.
When we allow Scripture to take up residence in our hearts and minds, it begins to shape our thoughts, guide our decisions, and redefine our perspective. Paul gave similar advice to his young protégé, Timothy: “Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth” (2 Timothy 2:15 AMP). When you make your home in the Scriptures, the transforming power of the living Word will inevitably show up in your life.
The Overflow of Worship
Amazingly, as you progress in the practice of dwelling in the Word, the next step happens almost involuntarily: worship. Paul says that this rich indwelling of the Word leads to singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude. A heart filled with the truth of Christ cannot help but respond in praise.
I think back to those Saturday mornings at Starbucks. So many times, I would leave with my heart full, and worship would just naturally flow. Sometimes it came out as music on the car ride home, other times it was a quiet prayer of thanks, and often it was simply a deep sense of gratitude for the truth I had just learned. Whatever the form, it was a response that came from a heart that had been touched by the Word of Christ. Gratitude is the natural echo of a heart that has encountered the goodness of God in His Word.
The Wisdom in the Word of Christ
Why is the "Word of Christ" so central? Because Jesus Christ is the ultimate revelation of God. He is wisdom from God, our righteousness, our holiness, and our redemption (1 Corinthians 1:30). He is God revealed to us (Colossians 1:18; Hebrews 1:3). This is why Paul instructs us to let this Word dwell in us so richly, because in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).
To know the Word of Christ is to know Christ himself. It is to access the deep treasures of wisdom that guide us, the righteousness that covers us, and the redemption that saves us. It is through Him that we find the clarity and understanding we need to navigate life.
A Prayer for You
Today, I join with the apostle Paul in praying this for you: I ask that God would “fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Colossians 1:9). May you come to know Christ more deeply by letting His truth make a home in you. And may your life overflow into worship and gratitude from a heart that is full of Him.
