Discovering True Peace with God—Romans 5:1

Discovering True Peace with God—Romans 5:1

Written by Juli Camarin
"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…" (Romans 5:1)

Every so often I'll be driving and spot that old bumper sticker: "No Jesus, No Peace; Know Jesus, Know Peace." It always makes me smile a little. It's such a simple play on words, but there's real weight underneath it. When life gets turbulent, our hearts start aching for something steady to stand on. And apart from Jesus, that kind of peace stays frustratingly out of reach.

For the first few chapters of this letter, Paul has been building a careful, stunning case. Righteousness comes only through faith in Jesus, completely apart from anything we could ever do to earn it (Romans 3:22). He works through every objection someone might raise. Then, at the start of chapter 5, he shifts.

He moves from how we're made right with God to what that gives us. And the first blessing he names is a big one—peace with God.

Sit with that for a second. In Christ, we actually have peace with God.

Through faith, Paul says, we're justified. That means we're credited with a perfect, spotless record, as though we'd always kept God's standards. We don't have to perform to earn His favor anymore. That one truth pulls us out of the exhausting cycle of striving and drops us into something better entirely—friendship, closeness, real peace with the Father.

Now, it helps to catch the difference between feeling peaceful and having peace with God. Feeling calm on a hard afternoon is nice, but it comes and goes. Peace with God is deeper. It's a permanent change in your relationship status. You are no longer on opposite sides from your Creator. The war is over. Done.

That bumper sticker still rings true, of course. Trouble comes. Hard days show up. But when you know Jesus—and you know your standing with the Father is settled and secure—there's a steadiness in your soul that the chaos can't touch.

So take an honest look at your own heart today. Are you still wearing yourself out trying to earn peace with God through effort and good behavior? Or are you willing to rest in the peace Jesus already secured for you?

A Few Honest Questions:

  1. When was the last time you felt genuinely at peace with God—and was it because of something you did, or something He did?

  2. What's the difference, in your own life, between chasing a calm feeling and trusting a settled relationship?

  3. If the war between you and God is truly over, what would change about how you talk to Him this week?

Through Jesus Christ, Paul says, we are fully reconciled to God. He draws a striking contrast between two men: Adam, whose disobedience let death enter the world, and Christ, whose free gift poured out life far more abundantly. Where sin brought separation, grace brought us home. And here's the part that changes everything—this reconciliation isn't a distant hope you're still waiting on. Right now, today, you are righteous, holy, and completely acceptable to God. Not someday. Already.

Whether you're a longtime believer or simply searching, this guide meets you right where you are and invites you to look closer.
