"Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation." (Romans 5:9-11)

A lot of us carry a quiet fear in the back of our minds. Even after we come to faith, we half-expect God to eventually give us what we deserve. We stumble, and we brace ourselves, waiting for the other shoe to drop—wondering if His anger is finally about to catch up with us.

Paul takes that fear apart with one brilliant move in Romans 5. He uses a "how much more" argument to show just how secure we really are in Jesus. If Christ was willing to die for us at our absolute worst, how much more will He save us now that we belong to Him?

Start with the foundation Paul already laid. While we were still His enemies, Jesus died for us (Romans 5:8). And because of that sacrifice, we've been justified by His blood.

Justification is a heavy word, so let's make it plain. It means we've been fully acquitted in heaven's courtroom. Declared righteous. Brought into a right, permanent relationship with God. And because that standing is certain, Paul lands on an incredible conclusion—we're saved from God's wrath. When you belong to Christ, you can finally set down the dread that God is out to punish you for your failures. The logic is simple: if someone loved you enough to die for you while you were their enemy, they are absolutely for you now that you're their friend.

Then Paul pushes it one step further, and this part is huge for everyday life. "For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!" (Romans 5:10).

We tend to think of salvation as a past event that books our future spot in heaven. But Paul says we're also being saved through Christ's life. So what does that mean on a random Tuesday? It means we're being rescued, day by day, from sin's ongoing grip.

Sin is a powerful thing, and it touches everyone. It sneaks into our habits, our private thoughts, our closest relationships. But because we're reconciled to God, the life Jesus offers starts loosening sin's hold on us. We're not made instantly perfect—the struggle is real—but we're not powerless anymore either. (Paul digs way deeper into this rescue in chapters 6 and 7, so hang tight.)

Here's the beautiful thing: your freedom from the power of sin is a present, unfolding reality. God is at work in you right now, offering hope not just for eternity but for the actual battles you're facing today.

We're justified—our past is forgiven.
We're reconciled—our present is secured in His friendship.
We're being saved—our future is anchored in His ongoing life and power.

In Christ, you've already received full reconciliation. You don't have to earn your way back into God's good graces. So take Him up on the invitation and simply rejoice in the God who is saving, sustaining, and freeing you today.
