"Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned…" (Romans 5:12)

Here's a heavy reality none of us signed up for: we're born into a struggle we never asked for. From day one, we're wrestling with a brokenness that somehow feels completely natural to us. Paul traces it all the way back to the beginning—and to one man.

Adam wasn't created broken. God formed him perfectly and placed him in a beautiful garden. But Adam was more than just the first human. He stood as humanity's representative—think of him as an ambassador for the whole human race. The choices he made carried weight for every one of us who'd come after.

God gave Adam remarkable freedom. Eat from any tree in the garden, He said, except one (Genesis 2:16-17). A clear choice, with a clear warning about what crossing that line would cost. Up to that point, Adam knew nothing but the goodness and blessing of God.

Then Adam stepped over the line and disobeyed the one command he'd been given (Genesis 3:6). And in doing so, he pulled all of future humanity into a devastating new reality. Sin entered the world.

Now, sin isn't only about breaking divine rules, though it definitely includes that. It's also an active, powerful force. We're born into a current that runs across generations. Because of that one choice, we now live under both the guilt of sin and its grip. And exactly as God warned, death came right along behind it. Adam made us a fallen people, so we all live under the slow decay of the world—physically and spiritually.

If I'm honest, this can feel deeply unfair. One man's choice, thousands of years ago, and we're the ones feeling the fallout? Why should we carry the consequences of an ambassador who failed?

But here's the beautiful truth: Paul brings up this heavy reality to set us up for the greatest rescue story ever told.

God actually used this same principle of representation to save us. Adam was our first representative, and his failure brought death. But Christ stepped in as our final representative. If one man's actions could sink the whole group, then one Man's perfect life and sacrifice is more than enough to cover everyone who trusts in Him. The very unfairness of the fall is what makes the stunning grace of the cross possible.

So take an honest look at your life today. Where do you feel the weight of the brokenness sin has dragged into the world? You don't have to pretend it isn't there. Name the struggle—but look ahead with real anticipation, too. The first man, Adam, led us into the dark. But the final representative, Jesus Christ, came to bring us fully into the light. Let that hope steady your heart today.
