"...through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God." (Romans 5:2)

For our tenth wedding anniversary, my husband surprised me with tickets to see Mary Poppins on Broadway. It was a gift meant purely to delight me, and it landed perfectly. The show was fantastic.

Here's the thing—he'd bought those tickets long before our trip. So when we walked up to the theater, the attendants just warmly waved us in. I didn't have to haggle over my seat. I didn't have to prove I deserved to be there. I didn't have to cover some steep cost at the door. I simply received the gift, handed over the ticket, and walked inside.

That's a pretty good picture of what Paul describes in Romans 5:2. Through Jesus, we gain access by faith into a grace where we now get to stand.

Faith works a lot like those tickets. It ushers us into a permanent place of God's favor—Scripture calls it grace. Faith makes the introductions and hands us an all-access pass to the Creator of the universe. And the best part? The ticket is free to you. Jesus already covered the enormous price of admission. The debt's paid, so there's no earning your way into the room. You just get to enjoy the gift.

Eugene Peterson captures the heart of this so well in The Message: "We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand—out in the wide open spaces of God's grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise."

What an image. In Jesus, we don't get a quick, awkward introduction to God and then get shown the door. We're planted in the wide-open spaces of His grace. Rooted there. Fully known and fully loved.

And Paul says there's even more—we also get to rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. The word for glory here is doxa. It points to God's radiant majesty, yes, but in this context it's pointing at something else too: the blessedness handed to those who follow Christ. We get to share in the joyful, confident hope of God's future. The honor of belonging to Him forever. In Christ, you hold a permanent pass into the very best of what God gives.

So think about where you're standing today. Are you still outside the theater, exhausting yourself trying to scrape together enough favor to buy a ticket? Or are you willing to open your hands and receive the access Jesus already paid for?

Set the striving down. Step into the wide-open spaces of His grace, and let your heart actually rejoice in the hope of belonging to Him.
