“The mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:26-27)

As believers living on this side of the cross, we have been given gifts that are almost too wonderful to comprehend. One of the most profound is the reality that Christ Himself lives in us through the indwelling Holy Spirit. Paul calls this a "mystery"—a truth that was kept hidden for ages, a secret that God saved for the right moment. And that moment is now.

This is a truth so foundational that it's easy to overlook its sheer wonder. Let's take a moment to reflect on what this mystery truly means for us today.

A Mystery Revealed

To understand why this revelation was so earth-shattering, we have to look at the context of Paul’s letter. The church in Colossae was in trouble. False ideas had crept in, creating confusion and undermining the gospel. A prominent heresy was teaching that Jesus was something less than God. This led to a denial of ultimate superiority and the promotion of a secret, "higher" knowledge that was supposedly needed for salvation, something beyond what scripture offered.

This is why Paul dedicates so much of his letter to establishing the absolute supremacy of Jesus. He declares that Christ created everything and now holds it all together (Colossians 1:16-17), and that He is the source of our complete redemption (Colossians 1:20). But Paul doesn't stop there. He reveals that his entire life's commission was to present the word of God in its fullness (Colossians 1:25). And what is this fullness? It is the mystery of Christ living in them (Colossians 1:27). 

He drives this point home in the next chapter: “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority” (Colossians 2:9-10). Paul’s correction is brilliant. He shows the Colossians that they don't need to search for some secret knowledge, because everything they could ever need for salvation is found in Christ. They have already been given fullness in Him, because in Christ, all the hidden treasures of God are revealed.

This word "mystery" (Greek: mystērion) appears 27 times in the New Testament. It doesn't mean a puzzle to be solved, but a divine secret that is impossible to know unless God chooses to reveal it. Things that were hidden from the beginning of time were finally brought into the light when Jesus came. The fact that Christ now lives in His people is one of the greatest of these revealed secrets, which makes it incredibly important for us to grasp.

Your Hope of Glory

While the Old Testament prophesied that salvation would one day be offered to the Gentiles, no one could have predicted how God would accomplish it. The mystery was that Christ would not just be with His people, but would live in each member of the church—both Jew and Gentile—uniting them into one body. This was completely unknown, a new and beautiful work of God.

As redeemed people, we have the incredible riches of Christ living in us, working through us, and shaping us from the inside out. This indwelling of the Holy Spirit is more than just a comfort; it is our guarantee of a future with God. It is, as Paul says, our "hope of glory."

The letter to the Ephesians describes this beautifully, calling the Holy Spirit a down payment on our inheritance: “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:13-14).

Think about that for a moment. God not only gave us everything we need for life in this world by sending His own Spirit to live within us, but He also wanted to make His promise for our future absolutely clear. The Holy Spirit is our deposit, our hope, our down payment for the glory that is to come.

Living Out the Mystery

What should our response be to such a beautiful gift? Paul’s own life gives us the answer. His response was to “proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ” (Colossians 1:28). He labored for this message his entire life.

Our response, likewise, is to be given with our lives. It is to labor to make His great name known, not just with our words but by who we are becoming. It is being sensitive to His leading and direction, allowing the Christ who lives in us to be seen through us.

I am so grateful to be a part of this amazing revelation. Christ lives in us. He will live through us, helping us in every single moment. Today, I pray that you will take some time to ponder this profound truth. Ask God to help you see it in a fresh, new way.
