“I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness.” (Colossians 1:25)

What an incredible gift God gave the church through the Apostle Paul. His life and ministry were a profound blessing for the body of Christ, and this verse captures the heart of his mission. He saw himself as commissioned directly by God for a specific purpose: to present a complete and full revelation of Christ to the church.

This was not a casual task for Paul; it was his life's singular focus. He was so dedicated to this mission that his letter to the Colossians is centered on revealing the richness of Christ. He speaks of a mystery that was hidden for ages but is now being revealed to God's people (Col. 1:26-27). This is why his constant prayer is for believers to be filled with the knowledge of God's will, understanding it with the wisdom that only the Holy Spirit can provide (Col. 1:9).

This theme of seeking full understanding echoes throughout the letter:

• “…We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Col. 1:9).

• “We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ” (Col. 1:28).

• “…so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:2b-3).

• “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ” (Col. 2:8).

• “...and pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should” (Col. 4:3-4).

Paul took his commission with the utmost seriousness, and we are the beneficiaries of his dedication. He labored, suffered, and prayed so that we could grasp the fullness of God's Word.

Why Knowledge Matters

The prophet Hosea delivered a sobering message from God centuries ago: “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). This is a startling thought. The greatest threat to God's people isn't always an external enemy, but an internal ignorance of God’s Word. The remedy, however, is beautifully simple. As Paul explains in another letter, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).

Our faith is not built on abstract feelings or wishful thinking. It is built on the solid foundation of God’s promises and truths as revealed in Scripture. It is our responsibility to receive these precious words, to take them in, and to allow the Spirit of God to bring understanding to our hearts. Faith comes by hearing. It grows as we engage with God's message.

If a lack of knowledge can lead to destruction, imagine the alternative. What would happen if we truly grasped the revelation of Christ that Paul gave his life to deliver? What if we understood our identity, our inheritance, and the power available to us? Jesus gave us a glimpse of this potential when he spoke to Peter, declaring that the gates of hell itself could not prevail against a church built on the revelation of who He is (Matthew 16:16-18). That is the power of knowing God in His fullness.

Paul’s commission was to present the Word, but our part is to receive it. Today is the perfect day to begin, or to continue, drinking deeply from the well of God's Word. It is more than just a book; it is a love letter from your Creator, a guide for life, and the source of a faith that can overcome any obstacle.

I pray that you find time today to quiet your mind and open the Scriptures. Ask God’s Spirit to speak to you, to bring clarity and understanding to your heart. May you enjoy a sweet and profound time with the Lord. As Paul encouraged the Ephesian elders, I commit you to God and to His Word.

“Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified” (Acts 20:32).
