“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority” (Colossians 2:9-10)

It's easy to get sidetracked. The path of faith isn't always a straight line, and countless ideas compete for our attention. In the previous verse, Paul warns us not to be taken captive by philosophies that depend on human tradition rather than on Christ. But how do we stay on track? Paul gives us a powerful reason, a profound truth to anchor our souls.

He writes, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority” (Colossians 2:9-10).

This is one of the most incredible statements in all of scripture. It’s not just an incentive to stay the course; it is the very heart of our reality as believers. Let's explore what it means to find our own fullness in the One who is Himself the fullness of God.

Christ: The Fullness of God

First, Paul makes a declaration that should stop us in our tracks: in Christ, the complete expression of God’s divine nature lives in a human body. This truth is the ultimate trump card. Since Jesus is the exact image of God, and all of God’s fullness dwells in Him, He becomes the standard by which everything else is measured.

Many things try to dethrone Jesus from this supreme place. Often, this happens in subtle ways—through ideas, traditions, or philosophies that seem harmless on the surface. We must learn to evaluate everything in light of what God has revealed through Christ. Paul faced this issue regularly, and he gave us the remedy: “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). When an idea opposes the truth of who Jesus is, we are called to capture that thought and align it with Him.

You: Brought to Fullness in Him

The next part of Paul’s statement is almost too amazing to comprehend. He says that because we are in Christ, we also have been brought to fullness. The Amplified Bible beautifully expands on this: “and in Him you have been made complete [and you have reached full spiritual stature].” Think about that for a moment. In Christ, we are filled with the Godhead—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are made complete.

This was one of the glorious mysteries Paul often spoke about, a truth hidden for ages but now revealed: “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). If we have already been given completeness and fullness in Christ, then philosophies and traditions that contradict this reality should have no power to deceive us. We are not lacking. We are not on a quest to find missing pieces of spirituality. In Jesus, we already have everything we need for a full life. Our journey is about learning to live out of the fullness we already possess.

Christ: The Head Over All

Finally, Paul reminds us of Christ's ultimate authority. He is the "head over every power and authority." Why would we look to any other source for our worldview when we are connected to the very source of all life and power? When we are in Christ, we are under the leadership of the One who rules over everything.

This truth has liberating power. Jesus Himself said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). True freedom comes from knowing and remaining in the truth. This happens as we renew our minds to God’s word and understand His will for us. Paul gives us the key to this process: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2). By focusing on Christ, the head over all, we are transformed and set free from worldly patterns of thinking.
