The journey of faith often requires us to be discerning. In a world full of compelling ideas and long-held traditions, how do we know what to hold onto? The Apostle Paul provides a powerful and direct warning, a spiritual compass to keep us oriented toward the truth.

He writes, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ” (Colossians 2:8).

This isn't just an abstract theological point; it's a practical caution for our daily lives. Paul is telling us to be vigilant, to guard our hearts and minds from ideas that sound appealing but are ultimately empty. The key, he reveals, is to measure everything against one standard: Christ. He is the plumb line against which all other notions, philosophies, and traditions must be weighed.

The Foundation of All Truth

Why is Christ the ultimate standard? Paul explains in the very next verse: “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9). This is a profound statement. It means that everything we need to know about God, His nature, and His will is found in the person of Jesus. There is no higher truth or secret knowledge to be found elsewhere.

Paul's warning is an encouragement to protect what is most important. We are called to keep Christ at the forefront of our lives, constantly remembering His authority and supremacy, and continually submitting to His Lordship. The enemy's tactic is often subtle, seeking to take us captive not through outright evil, but through meaningless reasoning and empty rituals that slowly shift our focus away from Jesus. We are warned to be on guard.

How to Protect Yourself from Deception

So, how do we actively guard ourselves against being carried away by these hollow philosophies? Paul offers us clear guidance throughout his letter.

First, we must ground our perspective in truth. The warning is not to be spoiled or carried off by ideas that debunk Jesus from His rightful place. This can happen in many ways. Sometimes, it involves philosophies that directly contradict the teachings of Christ. More often, it includes ideas that aren't necessarily "bad" but skew our perception just enough to get us off track. We can become enslaved to worldly principles simply because our reasoning is based on human ideas rather than on divine truth.

Paul gives us a beautiful antidote in the preceding verses: “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6-7). The way to remain in the truth is to continue in the same simple faith we had when we first believed. By staying established in Jesus, growing in our convictions, and cultivating a grateful heart, we build a strong defense against deception.

Second, we can protect ourselves by cultivating an eternal perspective. Further in his letter, Paul writes, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:1-2). When our perspective is fixed on our eternal reality with Christ, our worldview shifts. We begin to see life from heaven's vantage point, and worldly philosophies lose their appeal.

When Tradition Becomes a Trap

Traditions and customs are a normal part of life, and many can be beautiful expressions of our faith. The danger arises when we allow them to take precedence over the truth of Christ. Many traditions in worship today are based on human teachings. It is vital to evaluate the "why" behind our practices to ensure they align with the heart of Jesus' teachings.

The Colossians were struggling with this very issue. They were judging one another based on adherence to feast days, dietary rules, and religious festivals. Paul’s response was direct: “Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: ‘Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!’? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings” (Colossians 2:20-22). In other words, don't let human-made rules and traditions disqualify you from the greater plans God has for you.

Stay the Course

The message is clear: keep the main thing, the main thing. Our focus must remain on Jesus. Let the truth of who He is penetrate your thoughts and guide your behavior. Don't be deceived or swayed into following empty customs for the sake of tradition.
