“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6-7)

The Christian life begins in a moment of simple, profound faith. Yet, how does it continue? It's a question many of us ponder. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the church at Colossae, gives us a beautiful and surprisingly straightforward answer.

He writes, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6-7).

What an amazing truth: our spiritual journey continues in the very same way it began—by faith in Jesus. A successful life, a fruitful life, is found when we learn to live out of our union with Christ. In this single, powerful sentence, Paul gives us three practical pictures that describe how we can live continuously in Him.

Rooted and Built Up in Christ

First, Paul tells us to be "rooted and built up in him." Imagine a mighty oak tree. It stands firm against harsh winds, driving rain, and even seasons of drought. How? Its strength comes from a deep and sprawling root system, hidden from sight but essential for life. Those roots provide stability and draw vital nutrients and water from the ground. What we see above ground is only part of the story; the most important part is unseen.

King David paints a similar picture for the person who delights in God. He writes, “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers” (Psalm 1:3). This is the image of a life that flourishes because it is connected to a life-giving source.

In the same way, it is essential that our personal root system is built on the Lord Jesus. He is the foundation for all growth. As believers, we are described as “members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:19b-20). When our lives are rooted in Him, we have a firm foundation that can withstand any storm.

Established and Strengthened in Faith

Being rooted in Jesus is the foundational step. The second practical step Paul gives is to be "strengthened in faith." This makes perfect sense. We begin our journey with Christ by faith, so it is by faith that we must continue. The Amplified Bible phrases it as “becoming increasingly more confirmed and established in the faith.”

Think of faith as a muscle. If left unused, it becomes weak. But when it is consistently exercised, it grows strong, becomes toned, and is ready for whatever challenges come its way.

Returning to our tree analogy, faith is like the trunk. It is the visible part that grows taller and stronger over the years. The trunk is exposed to the elements, so it must be resilient enough to withstand outside forces. It also never stops growing. The size and strength of the trunk are a direct result of the depth of the root system. The more deeply rooted the tree is, the stronger and larger its trunk can become. Our visible strength in faith is a direct reflection of our hidden, rooted life in Christ.

Overflowing with Thankfulness

Finally, Paul instructs us to be "overflowing with thankfulness." In terms of our tree, gratitude is the beautiful plume of leaves and branches. It is the natural, visible sign of the tree's overall health. A tree without leaves can look barren and even dead. A life without thankfulness can similarly damage the health of a believer.

This practice of gratitude is not something we have to force; it is the natural outflow of the first two principles. When we are deeply rooted in Christ and find our faith growing stronger each day, thankfulness becomes a spontaneous response. We begin to see God’s hand moving in every circumstance, both good and bad, and gratitude abounds.

A life that overflows with thankfulness is a sign of spiritual maturity. It paints a beautiful picture of the redeemed life: rooted, secure, strong, mature, and complete—continually bringing glory to God.

Continue as You Began

Paul’s message is both simple and profound. The secret to the Christian life is not a secret at all. It is to continue just as we began. We received Christ Jesus as Lord through faith, and we are called to continue living in Him through that same faith. Let this truth encourage you today. Focus on deepening your roots in Him, exercising your faith, and letting a spirit of gratitude overflow from your heart.
