“I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is” (Colossians 2:4-5)

Have you ever been persuaded by a well-crafted argument, only to later find it was hollow? The Apostle Paul understood this danger. He knew that even the most sincere believers could be sidetracked by ideas that sound wise but ultimately lead away from the truth. His warning to the church in Colossae echoes with relevance for us today.

He writes, “I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is” (Colossians 2:4-5).

Paul’s concern points to a foundational truth: Jesus is the central message, not just of the Bible, but of all creation. Any idea that seeks to diminish His place is a diversion from the heart of our faith.

The Danger of Dethroning Jesus

The most dangerous idea one can embrace is any message that removes Jesus from His supreme spot in the universe. Paul urges us not to be deceived and not to let eloquent arguments derail us from what is most important: the eternal position of Jesus Christ.

This was not a theoretical problem for the early church. A specific heresy was filtering into Colossae, suggesting that Jesus was only part of the equation. This teaching, which later became known as Gnosticism, promoted the need for secret knowledge beyond what was revealed in scripture. It was a dangerous philosophy because it subtly dethroned Jesus from His rightful, supreme place.

Paul’s response is to remind them—and us—of a beautiful truth. It is only in Christ that the real treasures are found. He states that his purpose is for them to know “the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:2b-3). There is no secret key or hidden level of spirituality outside of Him. Everything we need for a full and complete understanding is found in Jesus.

Paul’s Case for the Supremacy of Christ

To counter these misleading ideas, Paul dedicates a significant portion of his letter to declaring the preeminence of Jesus. It's a powerful and poetic list that leaves no doubt about Christ's identity and authority.

Think about the weight of these declarations from Colossians chapter 1:

• He rescued us from the kingdom of darkness (vs. 13).

• In Him, we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins (vs. 14).

• He is the very image of the invisible God (vs. 15).

• He created everything—in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible (vs. 16).

• All things were created not only by Him but for Him (vs. 16).

• He existed before all things, and in Him, all things hold together (vs 17).

• He is the head of the church, His body (vs. 18).

• He is the first to rise from the dead, supreme over all (vs. 18).

• All the fullness of God dwells in Him (vs. 19).

• He reconciled everything to God, making peace through His blood (vs. 20).

• He presents us holy and blameless before the Father (vs. 22).

• He is the glorious mystery revealed—Christ in us, our hope of glory (vs. 27).

And the list continues into chapter 2, affirming that in Christ, the fullness of God lives in bodily form and that He is the head over every power and authority. This isn't just a list of theological points; it's a profound portrait of the One who holds the universe together and holds our salvation in His hands.

Our Call to Live in Him

Understanding the supremacy of Jesus isn't just an intellectual exercise. It has a direct impact on how we live our daily lives. After establishing who Jesus is, Paul gives a clear and practical instruction:

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Col. 2:6-7).

How did we first receive Christ? We came by faith, trusting in His Lordship. Paul’s encouragement is to continue in that same simple, deliberate faith. We are called to let the truth of His supremacy shape our thoughts, guide our actions, and anchor our hearts.

This is why faith is so essential. As Paul wrote to the Romans, "faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ" (Rom. 10:17). The more we immerse ourselves in the truth about Jesus, the more our faith is strengthened, and the less likely we are to be swayed by those "fine-sounding arguments."

Paul’s letter is a powerful call to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. He is not a minor character in our story; He is the center of it all. He is the beginning and the end, the Creator and the Sustainer, the Redeemer and our hope of glory.
