United in Love: The Path to True Understanding—Colossians 2:1-3

Written by Juli Camarin
“I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:1-3)

Have you ever felt like you were struggling for a purpose greater than yourself? The Apostle Paul certainly did. In a heartfelt letter to believers he had never met, he revealed the depth of his personal investment in their spiritual growth. He wasn't fighting for fame or fortune, but for something far more profound: their encouragement and unity.

Paul writes, “I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:1-3).

This passage reveals a beautiful truth: unity is the fertile ground where our understanding of God flourishes. Let’s explore this connection and what it means for our own faith journey.

The Link Between Unity and Understanding

Throughout his letters, Paul consistently urges the early churches to strive for unity. While unity brings many benefits, his reason in Colossians is specific. He desires for the Church to grow in understanding and experience the treasures of God’s wisdom.

Something truly magnificent happens when followers of Christ are bound together in love. This connection is not just about getting along; it’s a divine design that allows us to progressively grasp the fullness of God. Love brings us together in a way that opens our hearts and minds to a more accurate and complete knowledge of Him.

Think about it in your own life. When have you felt most encouraged in your faith? Often, it's when you are surrounded by fellow believers who support you, share their insights, and walk alongside you through challenges. This shared journey creates an environment where understanding deepens, not just for one person, but for the entire community.

Guarding Against Deception

Paul’s concern for the Colossians’ unity was also a protective measure. He knew that a fragmented community was more vulnerable to being misled. He continues, “I tell you this so that no one may deceive you with fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is” (Colossians 2:4-5).

A community rooted in love and shared faith acts as a stronghold against false teachings. When we are united, we can hold each other accountable, test ideas against scripture together, and stand firm in our collective faith. This strength doesn't come from uniformity of thought on every minor issue, but from a shared commitment to the core mystery of God: Christ himself.

In Christ, all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. By staying connected to Him and to each other, we gain access to this profound treasure trove. Unity protects this connection and keeps us anchored in the truth.

Living Out a Life of Love

So, how do we cultivate this unity that leads to such rich understanding? Paul doesn't leave us guessing. Later in his letter, he provides practical steps for clothing ourselves in a way that fosters true community.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity” (Colossians 3:12-14).

This isn't a checklist of rules but a description of a transformed heart. Each of these virtues—compassion, kindness, humility—is an expression of love. And love, as Paul states, is the ultimate bond that holds everything together in "perfect unity." It's the active ingredient that turns a group of individuals into a living, breathing body that can truly know and reflect God.

A Call to Unity and Love

Paul's prayer for the Colossians is a timeless call for all believers. His struggle was for their encouragement, their unity in love, and their journey into the full knowledge of God. This same call echoes to us today.

What might it look like for you to more actively strive for unity among your fellow believers? Perhaps it starts with a simple act of kindness, extending forgiveness, or choosing patience when it’s difficult. These small acts, when motivated by love, become the threads that weave us together.

Let’s embrace this beautiful truth: our love for each other is the springboard into the fullness of God’s knowledge and the treasure trove of His wisdom. By journeying together, united in love, we not only encourage one another but also come to know Him more deeply than we ever could alone.
