“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14)

Have you ever tried canning vegetables from a garden? I remember my first time, a few summers ago, when we had an overabundance of tomatoes. The process was surprisingly straightforward: sterilize the jars, prepare the tomatoes, and then boil the sealed jars to preserve them. Now, we have a shelf full of summer’s harvest, perfectly preserved and ready for a future meal. That seal ensures what’s inside is protected.

Something remarkably similar, yet infinitely more profound, happens when we hear and believe the gospel message. The Apostle Paul says we are "marked in him with a seal." God places His mark of ownership upon us and preserves us through the promised Holy Spirit until the day of our ultimate redemption. It’s a beautiful picture of security and belonging.

The Steps to Being Sealed

Just like canning, Paul outlines a clear process. It doesn't happen by accident.

First, we must hear the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation. The good news of Jesus has to be presented and understood. Then, after hearing, we must believe. Paul emphasizes this throughout his letters: faith is the response that opens the door to God’s work in our lives.

Once we believe, an incredible transaction takes place. We are given the Holy Spirit, who serves as a "deposit guaranteeing our inheritance." This isn't just a vague feeling; it is the very Spirit of God taking up residence within us. This Spirit begins a transforming work, creating in us a new nature that reflects the righteousness and holiness of Jesus himself. This is why God seals us—to preserve this new life and protect it from the corrupting influence of sin.

A Mark of Ownership

The idea of a "seal" carried significant weight in the ancient world. It wasn't just for preservation; it was a clear mark of ownership and authority. A king would place his seal on a letter or decree, and that mark authenticated the document. It declared, "This belongs to me, and it carries my authority."

When God places His Spirit upon us, He is doing the same thing. He is marking us as His own. This seal is our assurance that we belong to Him. As Paul writes elsewhere, God "set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come" (2 Corinthians 1:21b-22). This isn't an external mark, but an internal one, imprinted on the heart.

The scholar F.F. Bruce explains this beautifully. He notes that if someone’s right to a property was questioned, their seal was sufficient evidence to end the debate. In the same way, the presence of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life is the undeniable token that we belong to God. It is the evidence of our divine inheritance.

The Guarantee of What's to Come

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of this seal is what it guarantees. Paul calls the Holy Spirit a "deposit." In a transaction, a deposit is a down payment—a promise that the full amount will be paid later. The presence of the Spirit in our lives today is God's down payment, His firm promise of the glorious inheritance that awaits us.

This inheritance includes the full redemption of our bodies and our entrance into eternal life with Him. The Spirit is our guarantee that what God has started, He will faithfully complete. It’s a promise that our future is secure, held by the one who sealed us.

What an incredible and thorough plan God has orchestrated for our redemption! It begins with hearing the truth, leads to belief, and results in being sealed by His Spirit as a mark of His ownership and a guarantee of our future. This isn't the end of the story, but the beautiful, secure beginning.
