“For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.” (Ephesians 1:15-16)

It’s a beautiful habit of the Apostle Paul to open his letters with a prayer for the people he’s writing to. Yet, his letter to the Ephesians is unique. Here, he pauses twice to pray, once in chapter one and again in chapter three. Both prayers share a common heartbeat: a deep desire for believers to fully grasp the profound mystery of Christ and the Church.

Paul begins this first prayer by giving thanks. He has heard reports of their vibrant faith in Jesus and their tangible love for all the saints. This news, coupled with the truth he just shared—that they were "marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit"—causes him to rejoice.

He celebrates because he knows they are standing at the starting point of an incredible journey. Their faith and the seal of the Spirit have primed them to understand and receive everything God offers in Christ.

The Foundation of Faith and Love

Paul’s thankfulness is not for a vague or general reason. It is specifically tied to two things he has heard about the Ephesian believers: their faith in Jesus and their love for others. This isn't a coincidence. Faith and love are the twin pillars that demonstrate a life truly changed by the gospel.

Faith in Christ is the anchor. It’s the moment we hear the word of truth and accept the good news of our salvation. This is where our relationship with God begins. But true faith never remains an internal, private experience. It naturally overflows into love for others, especially for fellow believers—the "saints."

When Paul heard that their faith was active and their love was visible, he saw the evidence of God’s work. He recognized that they were not just believers in name, but were actively living out the implications of the gospel. This is what made him so thankful. They were ready for the deeper truths he was about to reveal.

The Power of Praying for Others

This passage gives us a powerful model for our own lives. Just as Paul celebrated the Ephesians, we can learn to celebrate the faith and love we see in those around us. It's a reminder to look for evidence of God's grace in the lives of our friends, family, and church community and to give thanks for it.

Paul’s response was to pray. He didn’t just feel a fleeting sense of gratitude; he channeled it into consistent, intentional prayer. He understood that while faith was the starting point, there was so much more for them to grasp. He prayed that their spiritual eyes would be opened to the hope, riches, and power available to them in Christ.

This is a practice we can adopt. We can take our cue from the Apostle and begin to pray specifically for our fellow believers. We can pray that they, and we, would be built up in the knowledge of God, growing into the maturity and unity of faith that Paul speaks of later in Ephesians. Near the end of this same letter, he urges them to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests... always keep on praying for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:18).

A Call to Gratitude and Intercession

What a beautiful and practical reminder. The journey of faith is not meant to be a solo endeavor. We are connected to one another, and one of the most powerful ways we can support each other is through prayer born from a thankful heart.

Who in your life has encouraged your walk with God? Whose faith has inspired you, or whose love has supported you? Today is a perfect opportunity to pause and follow Paul’s example.

Take a moment to thank God for them. Celebrate the work He is doing in their lives. And then, turn that gratitude into a prayer. Ask God to bless them, to open their eyes to the fullness of His love, and to continue the good work He has begun in them. In doing so, we participate in the beautiful mystery of the Church, building one another up in faith and love.
