“And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.” (Ephesians 1:9-10)

It is so easy to get lost in the details of daily life. We focus on our to-do lists, our immediate problems, and the small world directly in front of us. I know I do. I can become so wrapped up in the rhythm of the everyday that I completely lose sight of the bigger picture. We often think of our faith in these terms as well—as something meant to help us get through the day. But what if our redemption was about something far grander than just our personal salvation?

In the preceding verses of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul reminds us that we have been redeemed and forgiven through the riches of God's grace. He then adds a crucial detail: this grace was "lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding." Why does he emphasize this? I believe it is to prepare our hearts and minds for the staggering truth he is about to reveal: “…and he made known to us the mystery of his will.”

This wasn't just another piece of information. It was the unveiling of a divine secret.

What is the Mystery?

When the New Testament uses the word "mystery," it doesn't mean a puzzle we have to solve. It refers to a divine truth that was previously hidden but has now been revealed by God. It’s something we could never figure out on our own; it must be disclosed to us. This revelation is so profound that understanding it is meant to change everything—our perspective, our priorities, and our purpose.

We were redeemed and forgiven for a reason that extends beyond our own lives. Paul reveals that God has made known His plan to us, and here it is: to unite everything—all things in heaven and on earth—under the authority of Jesus Christ.

This is the ultimate goal of history. Every event, every story, every moment is moving toward this single culmination point. God is orchestrating a grand story where everything finds its rightful place under the headship of His Son. Our individual stories of redemption are beautiful and vital, but they are part of a much larger narrative. We have been invited into the greatest purpose imaginable.

The Center of Everything

Theologian Paul E. Billheimer beautifully captured this idea when he suggested that the finished product of all the ages is the "spotless Bride of Christ, united with Him." God is not just saving individuals; He is building a family, the Church, to be united with Christ forever. This has been the plan from the very beginning.

Think about that for a moment. God’s grand design for the universe has you in it. He chose you, blessed you, and redeemed you, lavishing wisdom and understanding upon you so that you could grasp this incredible purpose and participate in it. You have a role to play in this age and in the one to come.

While we don’t see this plan in its complete fullness right now, we live in the promise of its fulfillment. A day is coming when all things will be brought under the Lordship of Jesus. This is not just wishful thinking; it is the promised end of the story.

Finding Your Place in His Plan

This amazing revelation is not just for our intellectual curiosity; it is an invitation. It calls us to align our lives with God's eternal purpose. This begins by making Jesus the Lord of your own life. When you surrender your will to His, you step into the flow of what God has been doing since the dawn of time.

It can be transformative to pause and ask God to reveal this mystery to you personally. Let the understanding of His grand plan be the catalyst for change in your heart. Let it reframe your daily struggles and give new meaning to your existence. You are part of something eternal.

Today, will you take a moment to quiet your heart and adjust your focus to His will? The promise in Scripture is clear: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 29:13-14a). He is waiting to reveal the beauty of His plan to you.
