God Set You Free On Purpose—Romans 7:4
"So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God." (Romans 7:4)
Ever feel that pressure to perform for God? Like there's an invisible checklist, and if you just try hard enough, you'll finally produce the kind of spiritual life that makes him proud?
A lot of us live right there. But Paul says real change doesn't work that way.
Here's what he writes: "So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God" (Romans 7:4).
Back up a second. Just before this, Paul used marriage as a picture. A marriage covenant only holds while both people are alive. When one dies, the bond breaks, and the other is free to be joined to someone new (Romans 7:2-3).
That's us. Through the cross, you died to the heavy, impossible demands of the law. The old you — the one that died with Christ — was set free from all of it (Romans 6:6-7). The exhausting way of living is over.
But don't miss this. You weren't just freed from something. You were freed for something — to belong to someone new. The risen Jesus.
And here's where it gets good. We tend to treat "bearing fruit" like a job we have to grind out to prove we matter. But think about how a real relationship actually works. The good stuff in a strong marriage — trust, joy, a shared life — doesn't come from a rulebook. It comes from being close. From love. From just being together.
Same with Jesus.
The fruit you want to see — peace, love, a softer heart, something to give others — doesn't grow from anxious effort. It grows from closeness with him. Stay near Jesus, lean on the grace you didn't earn, and his life starts flowing through you. He grows things in you that you could never force on your own.
So maybe today you can just put the pressure down. Stop trying to manufacture growth. Receive the simple truth that you belong to him now, and watch what grows from that.
A Few Honest Questions:

Where are you still trying to perform instead of just resting in him?
-
What's one way you could get closer to Jesus today?
-
What would change if you stopped striving and trusted him to grow the fruit?
