"Do you not know, brothers-for I am speaking to men who know the law-that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?" (Romans 7:1)

Here's something nobody can argue with: dead people don't owe anything. When someone passes away, their debts and contracts just... stop. You can't collect from a person who isn't there anymore.

Paul leans on that exact idea to explain something huge. He writes, "Do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to men who know the law—that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?" (Romans 7:1).

Sounds like a legal footnote, right? It's not. It's how your freedom was won.

To see why, go back to the beginning. God made things good and handed us real responsibility over the earth (Genesis 1:28-30). We were meant to walk with him, no distance between us.

Then it broke. "Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). After Adam, we were born into a mess we couldn't fix and chained to a law we could never keep perfectly.

And here's the thing about God — he's just. He wasn't going to bend his own rules to rescue us. The debt had to actually be paid.

So Jesus didn't ignore the law. He kept it. All of it. He came as a man and lived without sin, so death had no real claim on him. When he died on the cross, he paid a debt he didn't owe — to cancel one we could never afford.

And it was enough. He "offered for all time one single sacrifice for sins" and then sat down (Hebrews 10:12-14). He didn't just survive death. He beat it. "Since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him" (Romans 6:9-10).

Now he stands as the go-between for a brand-new agreement (Hebrews 9:15), living forever as our priest, always speaking up for us (Hebrews 7:24-28). Whatever the law held against us — settled.

Which brings us back to Romans 7:1. The law only has power over you while you're alive. So how do we get free from the old life that's crushing us? We die to it.

When you trust Jesus, something real happens. You're joined to him. "Our old self was crucified with him... because anyone who has died has been set free from sin" (Romans 6:6-7).

Read that again. The old you actually died. And since that version of you is gone, the law that ruled it has no say anymore. None.

So live like it's true. You're not defined by your past or the charges that used to hang over you. You belong somewhere new. Paul puts it simply: "Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus" (Romans 6:11).

Most of us wear ourselves out trying to prove we're worth something, or quietly waiting for the past to catch up. But Jesus handled it. Completely. There's no fine print, no loophole, nothing he missed.

So maybe just sit with that for a second. You don't have to carry the old weight anymore. Spend time in the Word, let the grace you didn't earn actually sink in, and start living like the person you already are in him.
