"But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code." (Romans 7:6)

Ever tried to find your way around a new city with nothing but a list of written directions? You spend the whole time staring at a piece of paper, sweating every turn. Now picture walking that same city with a friend who knows every street. Same place, completely different experience. One feels like a test. The other feels like a walk.

That's the shift Paul is pointing to here. "But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code" (Romans 7:6).

For a long time, people related to God through a list of rules. And the rules weren't bad. Think about a toddler and a hot stove. You don't sit them down and explain heat conduction. You just say, "Don't touch." The rule keeps them safe until they're old enough to understand on their own. It's an outside boundary for a season.

Paul says the same thing about the law. "The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster" (Galatians 3:24-25). The law showed us where the lines were and how badly we needed a Savior. But it was never meant to be the whole story. A kid grows up and stops needing a babysitter watching every move. God never planned for us to live our entire lives under a checklist.

When you trusted Jesus, you were let out of that old system. You didn't trade it for nothing — you traded it for something personal.

Serving "in the new way of the Spirit" means your obedience stops coming from fear of breaking a rule. It starts coming from a relationship. God's Spirit actually lives in you now, changing you from the inside instead of pressing on you from the outside. Paul put it this way: "God has revealed it to us by his Spirit... we have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us" (1 Corinthians 2:10-12). Then he says something wild — "we have the mind of Christ" (1 Corinthians 2:16).

That doesn't mean you suddenly know everything. It means your heart slowly starts loving what he loves. You're guided, not policed. Your choices come from understanding his grace, not from dread.

So much of our energy goes into keeping the code perfectly, hoping it earns us a thumbs-up from God. But Jesus already kept it perfectly. You're free. You can put the checklist down and let the Spirit lead you.
