"Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died." (Romans 7:9)

Picture a five-year-old riding a bike in the driveway. Speed limits? Traffic laws? Not even on their radar. Those rules exist, sure, but they don't mean much to a kid that age. Now fast-forward. That same kid is sixteen, sliding behind the wheel for the first time. Suddenly the speed limit matters a lot. The law didn't change. The awareness did.

Paul describes something a lot like that here. "Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died" (Romans 7:9).

Paul's getting personal. He's remembering a time before the law's full weight landed on him — kind of like that season before a kid really grasps right from wrong. And here's the thing: sin was already around long before any rule showed up. Paul said it himself earlier — "before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law" (Romans 5:13).

Then the commandment comes into focus, and everything shifts. The law flips on a bright light. You see God's standard, and right next to it, you see yourself. Sin "springs to life" — not because the law created it, but because the law finally showed it to you.

It's easy to read that and decide the law is harsh. It isn't. The law is good (Romans 7:7). The problem was never the rule — it was us. We needed something to tell us the truth. Without it, we'd wander around clueless, never realizing how far we'd drifted from God. The law held up a mirror. And honestly, that was the whole point — to bring us to the end of ourselves, so we'd finally look up and see we needed Jesus.

But God didn't leave us standing there in the glare of our own failure. That's the good part.

Because of Jesus, you don't have to live crushed under any of it. Paul says your old self was crucified with Christ — done, finished — so sin doesn't run the show anymore (Romans 6:6-7). You actually died to the law so you could belong to someone else. To him (Romans 7:4). You're out of the old exhausting rulebook entirely, free now to live a new way, led by the Spirit (Romans 7:6).

The law did its job. It showed you the need. Jesus did his. He met it.

1. What old guilt are you still carrying around, even though Christ already dealt with it?

2. When did you last actually stop and thank God for coming after you the way he did?

3. What would it look like to choose life in him today — not someday, today?
