Why Do We Always Want What We Can't Have?—Romans 7:5
"For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death" (Romans 7:5)
You ever see a "Wet Paint — Do Not Touch" sign and immediately want to touch it? Or start a diet, and suddenly the one food you can't have is all you can think about? Funny how that works. You weren't even craving it. Then a rule showed up, and now you want it bad.
Paul noticed that same thing about us — and about the law.
Here's what he says: "For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death" (Romans 7:5).
The law itself was good. Holy, even. It showed us God's perfect standard. But our old nature grabbed those good rules and twisted them — used them to stir up the exact rebellion they were meant to stop. Like a kid who never thought twice about the stove until someone said, "Don't touch."
And that cycle had a harvest. Paul calls it "fruit for death." Exhaustion. Shame. Broken relationships. That constant pull toward the thing you knew you shouldn't do. If you've lived it, you know how heavy it gets.
But here's the part you need to hear. Paul isn't saying this to make you feel bad about your past. He's reminding you of the old life so you can see how big your freedom actually is now.
Look at the verse right before this one. "You also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God" (Romans 7:4).
See the swap? You died to that old realm. You don't belong to the nature that turned every rule into rebellion. You belong to Jesus now. And instead of grinding out fruit for death, your life with him grows something completely different — love, joy, peace, a heart that's actually changing (Galatians 5:22-23).
So maybe today you can stop staring at the old pattern like it still owns you. It doesn't. Thank God for that. Put the past down and just walk in the new thing he's growing in you.
