"For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man" (Romans 7:2-3)

How do you actually break free from your past? Not just feel a little better about it — but be truly, finally done with it. Paul answers that, and he uses a picture everybody gets: marriage.

Here's what he says: "By law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man" (Romans 7:2-3).

Stay with me, because there's something beautiful underneath it.

Marriage goes all the way back. When God brought Eve to Adam, he said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh." Then this: "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh" (Genesis 2:23-24). Two people become one. It's a deep, sacred thing — and the law binds you to that union until death.

That's Paul's whole point. We were born bound to our old nature the same way. Not just near it. One with it.

So how do you get out of a bond like that? Death. That's the only thing that breaks it. A widow is free from the marriage law because her husband died. And we needed a death too — to be free from the old self that ran our lives.

Here's the good part: Jesus already took care of it.

Paul said it earlier. "Our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin" (Romans 6:6). When you trusted Jesus, that old version of you died with him. And "anyone who has died has been set free from sin" (Romans 6:7). The old self is gone, so the law has nothing left to hold over you (Romans 7:1). The bond is broken — fully, legally, done.

And notice how God did it. He didn't just cut you loose. He set you free so you could belong to someone new. Because you died with Christ (Romans 6:3), you're free to be joined to him. Not as some second-rate arrangement. This is the whole reason you were set free — to be one with Jesus.

You're not chained to your old life anymore. The failures, the demands, the weight of who you used to be — that contract's been torn up.

2. What would change today if you really believed you belong to Christ now?

3. When was the last time you just... celebrated that? Not earned it. Just enjoyed it.
