The Unfathomable Gift You Could Never Earn—Romans 6:23

Written by Juli Camarin
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

We tend to lead with the bad news. Get the hard part out of the way, then finish on something hopeful. Paul does something similar here at the close of Romans 6—but the good news he lands on doesn't just soften the blow. It completely rewrites the story.

A wage is what you earn. It's the direct payout for work done. When we navigate life on our own, relying on our broken nature and going our own way, the natural result is death—separation from God, from life, from everything good. That's the honest math of living apart from Him.

If you stopped there, the picture would be devastating.

But Paul doesn't stop there. In the same breath: "the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." A gift is the opposite of a wage. You can't earn it, buy it, or work hard enough to deserve it. All you can do is open your hands and receive it.

And this gift—eternal life—isn't sitting in a vault somewhere waiting until you die to be opened. It starts now. Jesus said, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life" (John 3:36). Present tense. The moment you trust Christ, you step into unbroken fellowship with God. That's what eternal life actually is—not just a destination, but a relationship with the living God that begins the second you say yes to Him.

So stop trying to earn what He's already delighted to give. Set down the weight of your own effort. Open your hands, receive the grace He's been offering all along, and walk into your day as someone who's been given the greatest gift in existence—eternal life in Christ Jesus.

A Few Honest Questions:

  1. Where are you still exhausting yourself trying to earn what God freely gives?

  2. What would it look like to simply receive His grace today with open hands?

  3. How could you live differently this week knowing eternal life with God has already begun?

What if the sin that keeps tripping you up no longer had any real power over you? In Romans 6, Paul makes a claim that can quietly transform how you live: the moment you were born again, sin's grip on your life was broken. This 26-page guide written by Juli Camarin walks you through one of the most freeing truths in the whole letter—that you are no longer a prisoner to your old ways.

  • Deep, accessible insight into Romans 6

  • Thoughtful reflection questions to guide every step

Paul explains that we've been freed from sin's dominion and made alive to God through Jesus. Think about what that means. Your old, sinful nature wasn't merely improved or managed—it was crucified with Christ when you were baptized into His death. The chains didn't loosen; they fell off completely. And on the other side of that death is something remarkable: through Jesus, you've received the gift of eternal life and the freedom to actually live it. This chapter invites you to stop striving under sin's weight and start walking in the liberty that's already yours.

Whether you're a longtime believer or simply searching, this guide meets you right where you are and invites you to look closer.
