You Don't Have to Wait for Heaven to Experience New Life—Romans 6:4
"We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." (Romans 6:4)
We spend a lot of time looking ahead. We sing songs about how wonderful it'll be "when we all get to heaven," and that hope is real and good. But what if, while we're staring off into the future, we're missing something happening right now?
Here's the truth that has stopped me cold. You don't have to wait for eternity to experience the life Jesus offers. The new life He gives isn't just a someday promise—it's a right-now reality. If you're born again, you already have it. It's not sitting on a shelf in heaven waiting for you. It's here, ready to be lived today.
I remember reading these verses and really slowing down over them. When we died with Christ, Paul says, we were also raised with Him. That whole exchange happened the moment you trusted Jesus. He says it again in Ephesians: "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 2:4-6).
Catch the tense there. God made us alive. He raised us up. He seated us with Him. Past tense. Done. This isn't a far-off promise for the day you finally reach heaven. This is who you already are.
Here's where it gets tricky, though. Your everyday life doesn't always feel very heavenly, does it? Look only at your circumstances, your flaws, your bad days, and you'll start doubting you're living any kind of "new life" at all.
That's exactly why you can't build your identity on how you feel. Do you feel saved every second of the day, or do you know you're saved because God said so? If your shifting emotions get to decide your reality, you'll spend your whole life second-guessing your worth and fixating on every stumble.
Your feelings and failures don't define your spiritual reality. God's word does. You've been united with Christ. So when you feel unworthy, go back to Scripture and let it remind you of the grace and righteousness God freely gave you.
There's honestly no reason to just kill time down here, waiting for something that has, spiritually speaking, already started. Jesus defined this life beautifully: "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" (John 17:3). Because you can know Jesus right here, right now, you can actually enjoy where you are today. His peace, His grace, His presence—none of it is on hold until heaven.
So how do you practice this? Paul tells us: "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God" (Colossians 3:1-3). You step into this new life by shifting your focus. Aim your heart at Christ, and your ordinary days start reflecting His peace.
Stop postponing the life that's already yours. Lay down the old failures, set your mind above, and start living from your union with Christ today.
