How to Truly Consider Yourself Alive in Christ—Romans 6:11
"In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 6:11)
Ever feel caught between the person you used to be and the person God says you are? All of Romans 6 has been showing us how thoroughly Jesus broke sin's power. We really are free from the old nature. And yet the leftover habits keep showing up, and it's confusing.
It's easy to get frustrated with what you see in the mirror. If I'm supposedly free, why do I still trip over the same old stuff?
Here Paul hands us the key to actually experiencing this freedom in real life. He calls us to an act of faith rooted in who we are. Count yourself—consider yourself—dead to sin and alive to God.
Watch how this works. Just as Jesus died to sin, we're to consider ourselves dead to it too. Your freedom already happened the moment you trusted Christ. So now your job is simply to count it done. That's step one: settling God's word in your heart once and for all. Deciding, firmly, to believe what God says about you over what your struggles seem to shout.
And there's a real difference between obsessing over trying not to sin and simply considering yourself dead to it. When I fixate on my failures, I'm actually just fixating on my own effort. Staring at the old nature only feeds it—giving those habits more attention than they deserve. Instead, when something that looks like your old pattern shows up, you can quietly wave it off as not who I am anymore. You don't have to hand it any power. Renewing your mind to the fact that your old self is gone is what frees you to walk in real faith.
But the most important move isn't managing the old stuff—it's fixing your attention on being alive to God. You can't be pulled around by something you're not invested in. When your gaze is on living in Christ, everything else flows out of that.
Jesus knew this about us: He said, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). Fix your focus on God and what delights Him, and your life naturally becomes an extension of that love. Real change was never going to come from sheer willpower anyway. It comes from the heart. Jesus said it plainly: "The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart... For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45).
Fill your heart with the goodness of Christ, and it spills into everyday life all on its own. The shadows of the old nature start to fade, because your life is finally reflecting the new identity God gave you.
So here's the truth to carry today: you don't have to wear yourself out trying to master sin. Jesus already did that. Stop staring at your failures. Set your heart on Christ, and start living from the new life already flowing in you.
