"Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God." (Romans 6:8-10)

Ever feel like you're fighting a battle you were destined to lose? Look at your struggles long enough—the weight of the past, the pull of old habits—and it's easy to feel outmatched.

But what if your biggest enemy has already been completely disarmed?

That's the reality Paul opens up here. Jesus didn't merely survive the cross. He shattered the power of sin and death. And because He did, we get to live with Him forever.

To really feel the size of this victory, it helps to see how the early church understood it. In Colossians 2:15, Paul says God disarmed the spiritual powers and made a "public spectacle" of them, triumphing over them by the cross. That phrase meant something specific back then. When a kingdom conquered another, the victors didn't slip quietly home. They paraded the defeated army through the streets for everyone to see. The whole point was to prove, publicly, that the enemy was crushed, humiliated, and no longer a threat to anyone.

That's what Jesus did. He didn't tiptoe out of the tomb. He made a spectacle of Satan, sin, and death—beat them so thoroughly there's no coming back. They've been stripped of every ounce of power over you.

"For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him" (Romans 6:9). How often do we live like the enemy is still winning? We picture Jesus as someone who barely escaped death, when Paul says He's the absolute master over it. The instant that stone rolled away, death's grip broke for good.

When Jesus went to the cross, "the death he died, he died to sin once for all" (Romans 6:10). He was done with it—permanently. And because He finished the job perfectly, He can't die again. Death has no claim on Him at all.

But here's the part that should make you grin. Jesus didn't defeat death just to stand there alone in the winner's circle. He did it to bring you with Him. The verse ends, "but the life he lives, he lives to God." Right now Jesus is enjoying unbroken fellowship with the Father—and through grace, He's handing that same fellowship to you.

When you trust Jesus, you're joined to the conquering King. You're on the winning side. Because sin and death have no mastery over Him, they have no mastery over you either. You don't have to spend one more day intimidated by an enemy that's already been paraded through the streets in defeat.

So renew your mind to this today. Set down the fear. Stop measuring yourself against powers that have already lost, and rest in the freedom your Savior locked in for good.
