Freedom You Haven't Noticed Yet—Romans 6:5-7
"For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin." (Romans 6:5-7)
Picture a little bird that's spent its whole life in a cage. One day someone swings the door wide open. It's free—it could fly straight into the open sky. But it just sits there on its familiar perch, because the cage is the only world it's ever known. Technically free. Living captive.
That's a lot of us, spiritually. Through Jesus, the cage door is wide open. But if we never really realize we're free, we'll never spread our wings.
Paul lays this out plainly. Through Christ's death and resurrection, we've been permanently freed from the things that used to own us. The lock is broken. We are not slaves to sin anymore.
So if that's true, why do we still struggle? Why do old habits keep tugging at us?
A big part of it comes down to what we know—or don't. Hosea put his finger on it: "My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:6). If you don't really know you're free from your old nature, you'll keep living inside the outline of a cage that isn't even locked.
When you slip up, it's so easy to sink into shame and think, See, I'm still a prisoner to this. But Paul says your old self was crucified with Christ. Sin doesn't own you. When you struggle, it's not because sin is still your master—it's because your mind is still shaped by the cage. Old habits, old thought patterns, old reactions take time to catch up with your new reality.
So how do you learn to fly? You retrain your thinking to match God's truth. Romans 12:2 gives the blueprint: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
The more you soak in Scripture, the more the traces of the old life fade. You stop seeing yourself as a helpless prisoner and start seeing a deeply loved, genuinely free child of God. And here's the relief in that—the Bible takes the burden of performance right off your shoulders. You don't have to fight your way to freedom. Jesus already won it. Your job is to renew your mind until you believe it.
So where are you still identifying with the cage? Ask God to help you rethink it. Step out. Leave the old identity behind, and walk into the freedom that's already yours.
