Who Are You Choosing to Obey?—Romans 6:15-16
"What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?" (Romans 6:15-16)
The Bible tells us Jesus paid the full price for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). On the cross, He secured our forgiveness completely and forever (Hebrews 10:12). And because grace is that huge, a question naturally bubbles up: if my past, present, and future are all already covered, does it really matter how I live today?
Paul goes straight at that question. And his answer is worth sitting with.
Let's be honest about the assumption underneath it. We tend to think that if God loves us no matter what, our daily choices stop mattering. So here's the honest truth: when you stumble, God doesn't revoke His love or cancel your salvation. You're securely held in grace.
But grace was never a permission slip to live recklessly. Paul points to something deeply true about human nature—we become servants to whatever we keep yielding to. What you choose to obey shapes your days and the whole direction of your life. Keep handing your attention and habits over to sin, and eventually it traps you again.
When we treat bad choices casually, we invite wreckage into our lives. Scripture says Jesus came to destroy the works of the enemy (1 John 3:8). We don't need to live scared of a beaten foe—but we do need to see sin for what it is: an entanglement. It twists the freedom Christ bought for us. It opens the door to consequences that damage our peace, our relationships, our own hearts.
And catch this—God doesn't ask you to walk away from sin because He's some angry taskmaster demanding perfection. He asks because He knows going back to old habits will slowly wrap you up again. He loves you far too much to watch you live in a cage He already unlocked.
The flip side is beautiful. Yielding to God leads you naturally toward righteousness. When you offer your daily choices to Him, your life starts lining up with the freedom He promised. Obedience just brings your actions into harmony with who you already are. Honestly, it feels right—because it is right for the new you.
So stop treating old habits like they're no big deal. Remember what it cost Jesus to free you from those chains. Choose to hand your life over to the One who leads you into real freedom, lasting righteousness, and a life that's actually full.
