The Choice That Leads to Holiness—Romans 6:19

Written by Juli Camarin
"I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness." (Romans 6:19)

It's actually kind of stunning how much freedom God gives us. He's not up there micromanaging every move. We're not robots. He invites us into a relationship where what we choose actually matters—day in, day out.

And yet, two thousand years ago, Jesus provided everything we need to walk in real freedom. The chains are already broken. The cage is already open. Whether we actually experience that freedom, though, has a lot to do with what we choose to give our lives to.

Paul made this point a few verses back: "When you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey" (Romans 6:16). Your freedom in Christ is completely real and completely finished. But your daily choices shape whether you actually live inside it.

So here's the practical side of it. We're still in a broken world. Old habits still pull. Old patterns still surface. Paul's answer isn't to try harder or muscle through on willpower. He says: just as you once handed yourself over to impurity, now hand yourself over to righteousness instead.

When you do that consistently—when you keep offering your choices, your attention, your actions to God—something changes. The old patterns start to lose their grip. The residue of the life you used to live slowly fades. And what grows in its place is holiness. Not holiness you manufactured through effort, but holiness that branched out naturally from staying connected to Christ.

That's the picture here. Holiness is fruit. It grows. You don't force it into existence—you cultivate the right conditions and let God produce it. When your life is genuinely rooted in Christ, holiness just comes.

So today, stop handing yourself back to the patterns that already lost their claim on you. Trust the freedom Jesus secured. Offer your life to His righteousness, and watch holiness grow—not because you forced it, but because you stayed close to the One who produces it in you.

A Few Honest Questions:

  1. What old pattern are you still yielding to instead of letting His righteousness take root?

  2. How could you intentionally offer your choices to God today instead of defaulting to what's familiar?

  3. Where do you need to stop striving and simply trust that holiness will grow as you stay close to Christ?

Paul explains that we've been freed from sin's dominion and made alive to God through Jesus. Think about what that means. Your old, sinful nature wasn't merely improved or managed—it was crucified with Christ when you were baptized into His death. The chains didn't loosen; they fell off completely. And on the other side of that death is something remarkable: through Jesus, you've received the gift of eternal life and the freedom to actually live it. This chapter invites you to stop striving under sin's weight and start walking in the liberty that's already yours.

Whether you're a longtime believer or simply searching, this guide meets you right where you are and invites you to look closer.
