You Don't Have to Carry Your Past Anymore—Romans 6:20-21
"When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!" (Romans 6:20-21)
I carried a heavy load of guilt for a long time. Same memories, playing on repeat. Same shame, building up until it felt suffocating. And for years, when I'd read these verses in Romans, I'd just pile more condemnation on top of it. I thought Paul was pointing a hard finger at everything I'd done wrong.
Turns out I had it completely backwards.
Paul isn't writing to crush us. He's writing to free us. He draws the contrast between the old life and the new one so sharply not to shame us, but to make sure we see how enormous the miracle actually is.
In our old lives, separated from God, the results were obvious. Everything we chased produced shame, brokenness, and death. But now? We're under the care of righteousness. That old, destructive nature no longer defines us.
Paul spells out the contrast vividly in Galatians—the old life producing things like hatred, discord, and selfish ambition, and the new one producing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and self-control (Galatians 5:19-23). The difference is impossible to miss. The old way wore us out. The new way bears fruit that actually lasts.
So if shame is still whispering your past back at you, hear this clearly—that's not God's voice. He's not holding your history over your head. He already forgave you, and He's already moved on from it. Paul put it plainly to the Corinthians: "You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God" (1 Corinthians 6:11). Washed. Sanctified. Justified—meaning in God's eyes, it's just as if you never sinned at all.
When I finally grasped that, the condemnation just lifted. The past stopped having the last word, because I realized it belonged to a life that had already ended. You've been set free. Stop rehearsing what Christ already erased. Engage with the word, step boldly into who you actually are now, and live like someone who's been washed clean—because that's exactly what you are.
A Few Honest Questions:

-
What burden of condemnation is God inviting you to finally set down today?
-
What's one way you could step into your new identity in Christ this week?
