"But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life." (Romans 6:22)

I remember reading "Be holy, because I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16) and feeling an immediate, sinking weight. God's standard is His own perfection. Looking at the Israelites in Scripture—how often they fell short despite every advantage—made it feel utterly out of reach. Like holiness was this impossibly high bar I'd never stop straining toward.

Maybe you've felt the same thing. All that effort. All that striving. And the bar never seems to get any closer.

Here's the thing that changes everything: under the new covenant, your holiness doesn't depend on how hard you try. It depends on Jesus.

Paul lays it out simply. You've been set free from sin. You belong to God. And out of that relationship, holiness grows—naturally, as a benefit, not as a demand. It's not something you have to work up. It's the fruit that forms when you stay connected to the vine.

That reframes the whole thing. You're not holy because you finally got disciplined enough. You're holy because God declared you His own, and His Spirit is alive in you. When God looks at you, He sees the righteousness of Jesus.

And then there's the second half of the verse. The result is eternal life. We usually imagine that's waiting for us somewhere in the future—a distant destination we're trudging toward. But Jesus talked about it differently. "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life" (John 3:36)—present tense. And in John 17:3 He defines it: "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." Eternal life isn't just where you're going. It's a knowing of God that starts right now, today, in this ordinary moment.

So lay down the striving. You don't have to manufacture holiness through sheer willpower. Just receive the truth—you belong completely to God. Rest in His grace, and let the life of Christ in you do what it was always meant to do.
