Can We Continue to Sin Because of Grace?—Romans 6:1-2

Written by Juli Camarin
"What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?" (Romans 6:1-2)

Ever heard a promise so good you immediately started hunting for the fine print? That's usually how we react the first time grace really sinks in.

All through Romans, Paul makes a claim that's almost hard to believe. We're completely made right with God through faith in Jesus. Grace covers everything—past, present, and future. Hebrews says the same thing: when Jesus "had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God... because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy" (Hebrews 10:12-14).

So if Jesus paid for every last sin, and grace is really that big, a question naturally pops up. Does that mean I can just keep on living however I want? Honestly, if that thought has never crossed your mind, you might not have grasped how scandalous this grace actually is.

Paul knows the question is coming, and his answer is a flat, resounding no. But look at why he says no. He doesn't warn you that God will yank His grace back if you push it too far. He points to something else entirely—who you now are. "We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?"

Here's the thing. You can't keep living in something you've already died to. Before Christ, you were dead under the weight and guilt of your failures. But God made you alive through faith (Ephesians 2:5). When you said yes to Jesus, He didn't just wipe your record clean. He handed you a brand-new nature (Romans 8:29; Ephesians 4:24; 1 John 4:17). He took your brokenness and gave you His righteousness in return (2 Corinthians 5:21). You died to the old way of living, so there's no reason to keep acting like it still owns you.

Living in sin just doesn't fit anymore. It's foreign to who you've become.

Now, I know it's easy to look at your everyday life, see the same struggles hanging around, and wonder if any of this is true for you. If I'm dead to sin, why do I still blow it?

Fair question. And here's the honest answer: you might still struggle, but sin isn't your identity or your master anymore. The Christian life was never a free pass to do whatever you please—but it was also never meant to be white-knuckling your way through a rulebook.

Freedom comes from learning to live out of who you already are. Paul says people who live by the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit wants, and that brings life and peace (Romans 8:5-6). So if you feel stuck in a loop of trying hard and failing anyway, chances are you're fighting a spiritual battle with plain old human effort.

So how do you actually live by the Spirit? By trying harder? By gritting your teeth and controlling every desire? No. Colossians 2:6 puts it simply: "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him." How did you receive Jesus in the first place? By faith. Not effort. And that's exactly how you keep going.

You walk in freedom by spending time with the Lord and letting His truth soak into you. Romans 12:2 calls it being transformed by the renewing of your mind. As you soak in that truth, your desires start to shift on their own. Living out your new nature stops feeling like a chore and starts becoming something that just happens.

Take a minute today. Where are you still defining yourself by your struggles instead of your Savior? Set down the exhausting weight of your own effort. Rest in this—God is faithful, and "he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion" (Philippians 1:6). You're a new creation. Go live like it.

A Few Honest Questions:

  1. Where are you still defining yourself by your struggles instead of your new identity in Christ?

  2. What exhausting self-effort do you need to lay down so you can simply live by faith?

  3. How could you sit with Scripture today and let it renew the way you think?
